Dahi Karela - Bitter Gourd with Yogurt - Gluten Free




Ingredients:

Frozen fried karelas :  1 cup
Onion - 1 large ( cut in juliens)
Serrano pepper : 1 chopped finely ( optional)
Plain yogurt: 1/2 cup
Salt               : 1/2 tsp
Chaat masala : 1 tsp( available at Indian grocery stores)
garam masala : 1/2 tsp
Red chilli powder : 1/2 tsp
Cumin seeds : 1 tsp
Canola oil.     : 1 Tbsp

Method:

  1. Turn on the stove and place the pan with oil on it. 
  2. When the oil is hot , add cumin seeds. 
  3. As soon as the cumin seeds start spluttering, add onions. Sauté. 
  4. Add Serrano pepper if you like your dish hot.(optional) 
  5. Now add salt , chaat masala, garam masala.
  6. Thaw fried frozen bitter gourds and add to the pan with the yogurt. 
  7. Turn the heat on high so that all the moisture evaporates. Mix well. 
  8. Dahi karela is ready to go. Eat it with your choice of bread. I love to eat it with paranthas. 
 Note:
1. Chaat masala is a blend of spices . The main ingredient is dry mango powder along with roasted ground cumin and rock salt. It is  a fine blend which is used in many recipes . It is easily available at Indian Grocery stores. I recommend it. It just uplifts the flavour of the dish  . 

2.  I have used frozen fried bitter gourds. I try to freeze fried karela. It comes very handy for weeknights dinner when you are in rush to cook dinner.
